City of learning

Hangzhou has become the first Chinese city to join the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities, according to local officials. The city has also “taken the national lead” when it comes to providing 15-year compulsory education from kindergarten to senior high school, say officials. About 60 percent of the city’s high school graduates now enter college, one of the highest rates in the country.

Hangzhou has more than 400 libraries, museums, theaters and community cultural centers. Hangzhou Library is one of the first in the nation to allow people to read books and journals without a library card.

The city also has more than 450 rural cultural centers, providing entertainment and reading material to residents in rural and suburban areas.

Some 1,000 cities worldwide have applied to join the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities, which opens the door to policy guidance, know-how and best practices for cities.
