Corruption punished

DURING the first 11 months of this year, 1,133 local officials were punished for corruption and misconduct, the Hangzhou Discipline Inspection Commission said last week.

The commission received 8,826 tip-off letters, probed 1,269 cases and published the cases of 35 corrupt officials. Its actions drew strong support from the public, according to a poll of 17,410 people and 1,518 organizations. Of those surveyed, “daring to take responsibility” was considered the best quality in officials, followed by “a down-to-earth approach to work,” “efficiency” and “honesty.”

With the holiday season setting in, the discipline inspection commission said it has stepped up supervision to prevent lavish banquets at public expense, officials entertaining themselves in high-end clubs, and using government vehicles for private purposes.
