THE Hangzhou Urban Management Commission said that manhole covers across the city need to be replaced and it is inviting designs from the public.
Presently, the city has two types of manhole covers, a round one with a diameter of 70 centimeters and a square one with 50-centimeter sides. They are made of compressed rubber particles, crushed glass and iron.
China Academy of Art has designed three series of manhole covers, featuring well-known Hangzhou scenic spots, art works from the Southern Song Dynasty (960–1279) and auspicious patterns in Chinese tradition.
Designs should be submitted at http://z.hangzhou.com.cn/2013csnk/index.htm by 6pm of June 20. The commission will select six winners, with prizes ranging from 2,000 yuan to 5,000 yuan.
