Dreams of a woman

Chen Haiyan’s solo exhibition “Dream on Knife Tip” opened at the Renke Art Gallery earlier this month.

A lecturer of engraving at the China Academy of Art, the exhibition showcases 30 pieces she has made since the mid-1980s, including ink wash paintings and color and black-and-white wood engravings. All the works are inspired by her dreams.

“I take my notebook to bed so that I can write down my dreams as soon as I wake up,” said the artist.

“I translate them into the artistic language you see in my engravings.”

The images in her works are usually explained in a few poetic lines which reveal her sensitivity as a woman artist. Chen’s pieces are on show around the world, including in the British Museum and the National Art Museum of China.

The exhibition runs through January 3.
