Eastern European looks east for inspiration
NATIONAL artist of Ukraine Mykhailo Guida is the subject of a major solo exhibition in Hangzhou, where he is a visiting professor, that features more than 100 paintings.
Guida started painting in the 1980s, and much of his work, which includes landscapes and portraits, displays a distinct Ukrainian style.
But since coming to China in the 1990s, Guida's love for China is evident in his paintings of Chinese women and beautiful Hangzhou scenery.
On visits to different parts of China, Guida paints what's around him, and around half of the works in the Zhejiang Art Museum show were created here. Water landscapes and Chinese women living near water are recurrent themes.
"Water is like life and it attracts me," Guida tells Shanghai Daily. "The cultures of Ukraine and China are close, and I am interested in Oriental philosophy."
Though he works in oils, many of Guida's work seem Oriental at first glance, partly down to the free style and subject matter.
Chinese women and their imaginative lives are prominent themes: In "Bird Island," women wear bird cages as decoration; while in "Fish Island," fish are women's accessories.
Another feature is the gray tones Guida favors. "Gray is a complicated color, it can be cold or warm, dark or light," he explains.
In "West Lake after Rain," which depicts a bridge on the West Lake, Guida uses gray for the sky, water, bridge and trees. The only spots of color are the cream daubs of the umbrella a person on bridge is holding and the sun.
The exhibition includes history paintings, genre, landscapes, portraits and still lifes.
Date: Through May 26, 9am-5pm
Address: 138 Nanshan Rd
