‘Eco city’ status
HANGZHOU qualified for “eco-city” status after passing an evaluation by national authorities last week. Water samples taken from the Qiantang River, Zhaoxi Creek, and the Qiandao Lake, Hangzhou’s main sources of drinking water, all met water quality standard in the first half of the year. The city also registered 123 days with good air quality in the first half, 12 days, 18 days and 16 days more than the same periods in 2015, 2014 and 2013, respectively.
Meanwhile, the city’s average density of PM2.5 pollutants — particulate matter smaller than 2.5 micrometers in diameter and the main cause of smog — dropped 7.7 percent to 57.3 micrograms per cubic meter.
The city adopted the National V emission standard on April 1 for new vehicles. It has made plans to become an environmental-friendly city in 2002 and begun to apply for national eco-city status the following year.
