Emissions enforced

HANGZHOU will enforce National IV emission standards - equivalent to Euro IV - for automotive fuel from next month.

Gas prices will be raised by 0.3 yuan per liter afterwards, industry insiders said.

In addition to Hangzhou, the new gas will be used in Ningbo as well, and extended to other cities in Zhejiang Province by June 30 next year.

The move is expected to cut emissions of over 300,000 tons each year across Zhejiang Province. This is part of the National IV upgrade, which will be in place across the country this year, according to national government plans.

Since last year, residents in Hangzhou can only buy new cars that comply with National IV emission standards, otherwise the cars cannot obtain plates.

Cars should be checked once every two years. As long as the cars are properly used and maintained, they should have no problem passing the checks, say officials.

The province aims to eliminate more than 400,000 vehicles with emissions exceeding the national standard by 2015.
