Expo services
TEN special Expo bus services have been launched for the convenience of Hangzhou residents visiting the World Expo in Shanghai.
Every day from 8am to 7:30pm, 10 buses leave for Shanghai from Hangzhou. The one-way tickets cost 48 yuan (US$7). Buses return from Shanghai between 8am and 9pm.
All buses leave from Hangzhou Southern Bus Station and arrive either at Shanghai Southern Bus Station or Pudong Bailianjing Bus Station, just 50 meters from Gate 5 at the Expo site.
The new lines were arranged by Hangzhou Long-Distance Transport Group and the Shanghai Transport Group. In Hangzhou, the bus service started on Tuesday.
Sporty diplomats
Foreign diplomats from around China will take part in the 2010 Leisure Sports Games of Diplomats to be held on June 5 in Hangzhou.
Around 100 diplomats are expected to take part in soccer, tennis, golf, table tennis and swimming events.
It will be the first time the games have been staged outside Beijing.
The event is organized by the General Administration of Sport of China, Zhejiang Province Sports Bureau and Hangzhou municipal government.
Participants will also tour the city.
Allowance up
Hangzhou is raising the minimum monthly allowance for families living under poverty line.
Starting from July 1, the base allowance to residents living in urban areas will be raised from 400 yuan per month to 440 yuan. For rural areas it will be lifted from 300 yuan per month to 330 yuan per month - all around a 10 percent increase over previous levels.
Art show
The third Hangzhou Art Exposition will take place from next Wednesday through May 31 at the Peace International Exhibition Center.
The exhibition space covers 9,000 square meters and features 106 spacious exhibition booths. The event will be a high-end platform for communication and sales involving artists, gallery owners and others in the art profession and trade.
Talent call
Hangzhou plans to recruit 50 high-tech professionals from overseas for its National High-tech Industrial Development Zone within five years.
The recruitment campaign, which began on May 5, offers incentives and subsidies for people establishing projects in the innovation-minded city.
Gardens galore
"Hangzhou Garden," using West Lake as its theme, won first prize in the seventh International Garden Exhibition in Jinan, capital city of Shandong Province.
Hangzhou exhibit featured West Lake views, pavilions, water features, rockeries, walkways and other traditional elements.
The exhibition attracted gardeners from 91 cities in 23 countries and regions. They created 108 gardens covering 5,000 hectares.
Hangzhou won for design, matching of plants, construction and organization. The garden will be kept in Jinan.
Moms-to-be
All pregnant women in Hangzhou now can get special badges that identify them as future moms needing special consideration - so passengers on crowded transport will notice and give up their seats.
By wearing the emblems, the women won't be embarrassed and have to ask for a seat.
This is especially for women whose pregnancies are just a few months along and not noticeable.
Emblems are being issued by hospitals after a doctor certifies that a woman is pregnant.
