Food definitely worth waiting for
THERE are two restaurants in Hangzhou where it is basically guaranteed that long queues of hungry diners will be waiting for a table.
Bailu Restaurant and Grandma's Kitchen have both thrived for years, and loyal customers are willing to wait for one hour or more to get a table.
This means they serve great food and charge very little.
Bailu Restaurant has been a "legend" in the restaurant business for more than a decade. Although it's in the narrow Yesutang Lane, big queues form outside. If you can hold off on dinner until after 8pm, the waiting time will be much shorter.
When Bailu opened a branch at Zhongshan Road N., wait times did not drop at the original restaurant as long lines started forming outside the new location.
Zhao Shuguang, 60, is a loyal Bailu customer and takes friends there for festivals and other big occasions.
He says Bailu serves authentic Hangzhou cuisine.
Bailu makes old-style Hangzhou food, which is mild and not greasy. The restaurant's chefs also create their own creative dishes that retain the style.
As for price, 60 percent of dishes on the menu cost less than 30 yuan (US$4.77), and there are pages of dishes for less than 10 yuan each, including sweet and sour pork rib for 5 yuan.
Grandma's Kitchen is another restaurant that has long queues at every branch every day.
The chain can be considered an innovator of Hangzhou cuisine.
With more than 30 branches around the city and outlets in Jiangsu, Anhui and Liaoning provinces as well as Beijing and Shanghai, Grandma's Kitchen has spread quickly since opening its first branch on Hangzhou's Macheng Road 10 years ago.
Smart, minimalist decor, good service, a large menu and delicious food at economical prices all mean that diners who haven't made a reservation will likely have to wait in line. But it's worth it.
Of all its branches, Hangzhou locals say the Macheng Road eatery still offers the best food.
One reason for Grandma's popularity is its very economical prices considering the surroundings. Just glance at the menu - 3 yuan for a large bowl of mapo tofu (spicy bean curd) and 12 yuan for a big serving of pureed peas.
Recommended dishes of Bailu:
Fried egg yolk with chicken Wing, fried egg yolk with pork rib, sweet and sour pork rib, West Lake vinegar fish, papaya cake
Address: 15 Yesutang Lane; 52 Longyou Rd; 572 Zhongshan Rd N.; 2/F, Intime Department Store, 98 Yan'an Rd; 4/F, Yuanhua Department Store, 179 Yan'an Rd
