Free trade benefits

A Hangzhou company became the first to benefit from the Chinese-Swiss Free Trade Agreement that went into effect on July 1.

Zhejiang Huiyuan Foreign Trade Co Ltd sent a shipment of goods valued at US$29,600 to Switzerland on Tuesday and paid zero tariffs under the new agreement, saving US$889 on import duties.

The free trade agreement, signed in Beijing in July 2013 after two years of talks, is the first between China and a mainland European country. China earlier signed a free trade deal with Iceland.

Switzerland’s exports to China amounted to 8.8 billion Swiss francs (US$9.9 billion) last year, while its imports from China totaled 11.4 billion francs. Switzerland’s top exports to China are watches, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and machinery. Textiles and machinery are the main Chinese goods imported by Switzerland.
