'Gold' guides

HANGZHOU government will enact a set of rules on August 26 for the competition to find "gold medal" tour guides. The winners will be granted 5,000 yuan (US$777) every year.

Tour guides need to have more than three years of working experience, work for more than 120 days a year and have no complaints filed by customers to become a "gold medal" tour guide. Those who manage to obtain the honor three years in a row will become life-long "gold medal" tour guides. But those who violate the rules will have their honors cancelled immediately.

HK movie project

Hong Kong film heavyweight Emperor Motion Pictures announced this week a 5-billion-yuan (US$769 million) plan to build a movie-related infrastructure in Hangzhou.

The project in Yuhang District is set for completion in five years and will include a film and TV institute, a production center, a theater, a theme park and a holiday resort.

Hangzhou Party Secretary Huang Kunming said that Hangzhou was sparing no efforts in transforming the city into a hub for creative and cultural industries in China.

Hangzhou's scenic areas of West Lake, Xixi Wetland, Qiandao Lake and Qiantang River all provide rich resources and ample space for the development of these industries in the future, Huang said.

Emperor Motion Pictures is part of the Hong Kong music and film giant Emperor Entertainment Group and specializes in film production and distribution.

Lake clean-up

West Lake management authority started a campaign for a cleaner West Lake on July 31. Employees of the West Lake Scenic Spot Management Committee picked up trash around the lake to call on tourists to stop dropping litter.

Workers have collected more than 300 tons of trash from the lake every year, including plastic bottles, paper napkins and plastic bags, according to the management committee.

The committee is bidding to make West Lake the cleanest, most beautiful, most organized and safest World Heritage Site.

Art building starts

construction of Xiaobaihua Art Center, funded by the Zhejiang Province government, started on Tuesday on Shuguang Road. The 18,520-square-meter art center, composed of a theater, rehearsal halls and an office building will be finished in two and a half years.

The art center, dedicated to hosting Yueju Opera shows, was designed by the famous architect C. Y. Lee, designer of the Taipei 101 Tower.

"We hope the center could be among the world famous art centers like Broadway in the US," said Mao Weitao, head of Xiaobaihua Yueju Opera Troupe.

Cube contest

Hangzhou Cube Association, a branch of the World Cube Association whose members compete in events with the Rubik's Cube (3D mechanical puzzle), will host the first Hangzhou Cube Open on August 21.

More than 60 competitors across China have registered for the game. Contestant-wannabes can still register online at bbs.mf8-china.com by August 16.

The hosting committee also welcomes spectators to watch the game. People can call (0571) 8510-0000 to reserve a seat in the auditorium.

Car licenses down

The number of newly licensed cars in Hangzhou in the first half of this year dropped 4.43 percent from a year earlier, according to a report released by the Hangzhou taxation department.

A total of 129,000 cars were licensed in Hangzhou from January to June, 70,877 of them were registered in the city's downtown area.

After two years of rapid increase, the auto market in Hangzhou has seen a mild decline since February. Taxation department officials attribute the drop to the climbing oil price, traffic congestion and cancellation of complimentary policies for car purchase.

Group-buying rise

The revenue of group-buying in Hangzhou has reached 91.44 million yuan (US$14 million) in the first half of this year, according to group-buying guide website tuan800.com. Monthly revenues in the first half, though fluctuating, show a rising tendency in general.

February ranked the lowest due to the influence of the Spring Festival. May, on the other hand, saw the highest revenue brought about by the newly launched prepaid cards for petroleum.
