Grand Canal grows
Hangyong Canal, a new shipping link between Hangzhou and Ningbo, has extended the Grand Canal of China, the ancient waterway connecting Beijing and Hangzhou, by 240 kilometers eastward to the sea.
The Hangzhou stretch of the Hangyong Canal, built at a cost of 1.65 billion yuan (US$27 million), runs from Sanbao, north of the Qiantang River, to Xiaoshan before joining sections built by the cities of Shaoxing, Shangyu, Yuyao and Ningbo. Due to the height limit of Xiaoshan-Ningbo Railway Bridge, only ships under 500 tons can use the canal.
Officials said Hangzhou Port has become China’s third-largest inland port and handled 18.71 million tons of cargo last year.
The Grand Canal is expected to be named Jinghangyong Grand Canal in the near future. Jinghangyong stands for Beijing-Hangzhou-Ningbo.
