Green goals
HANGZHOU is aiming to become a state-level ecological city by 2014, Mayor Shao Zhanwei said this week.
The Ministry of Environmental Protection named Hangzhou as a pilot ecological city in 2009. It has invested 1.75 billion yuan (US$278 million) in ecological development and set aside 1 billion yuan annually to boost green projects in rural areas.
Hangzhou has closed 1,596 enterprises and production lines in its bid to cut environment pollution. Waste sorting systems, new-energy taxis and free public bicycles are among ecological developments.
The city will contribute to the national target of having 10-meter wide greenery belts along 95 percent of national and provincial highways in three years.
The city is also to create 80 kilometers of ecological landscape belts along its rivers.
