Hangzhou now comes daily in Shanghai Daily
ON Wednesday, the inauguration ceremony marking the launch of the Hangzhou Special page in Shanghai Daily was held at Sofitel Hangzhou Westlake. Fei Lai looks at this special cooperation between a tourist center and a newspaper Showcasing the thriving and dynamic city of Hangzhou, the "tourism heaven" and capital of Zhejiang Province, Shanghai Daily on Wednesday officially launched its Hangzhou Special page. The page appears Mondays through Fridays.
The page features stories that reveal Hangzhou's abundant tourism resources and its sound investment environment.
The inauguration ceremony marking the launch of the special page was held at Sofitel Hangzhou Westlake.
Song Chao, deputy minister of the Publicity Department of CPC Shanghai Committee and director-general of the Shanghai Municipal Information Office, said at the ceremony that it was a meaningful trial between Shanghai Daily, a young and innovative newspaper of 10 years old, and Hangzhou, a city with a history of more than 2,200 years.
"I believe sparks of joy will be created from the two sides," Song said. "With World Expo Shanghai 2010 just around the corner, I hope the Hangzhou Special will take the opportunities offered by Shanghai Expo, and strengthen international communications for both cities."
The page is co-sponsored by the Hangzhou Municipal Information Office, the Organizing Committee of the Hangzhou West Lake International Expo, the Hangzhou Tourism Commission and the Hangzhou Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Bureau as well as Shanghai Daily.
The page looks at Hangzhou's economic development, urban planning, tourism strategies, history, culture and interesting people. Expats can find practical guides for living and visiting the city.
Weng Weijun, minister of the Publicity Department of CPC Hangzhou Committee, looked back over the productive cooperation between Shanghai Daily and Hangzhou City last October. At that time, the two parties had published a supplement for the Hangzhou West Lake International Expo.
"The supplement was well-received. It actually led us to the joint production of the Hangzhou Special page today," Weng said. "I believe the page will successfully bring out all the charm of Hangzhou and create close ties between the city and the world."
Miao Guoqin, Party secretary of the Wenhui-Xinmin United Press Group, publisher of Shanghai Daily, also spoke at the ceremony. She appreciated Shanghai Daily's achievements in research and development of new media such as the Website, mobile phone news service, e-newspaper and e-magazine.
"The newspaper has a brand effect among readers at home and abroad," Miao said. "I hope when the time is right, the Hangzhou Special page will be delivered in many ways to our readers."
The Hangzhou Special page was published for the first time on March 2.
Zhang Ciyun, editor-in-chief of Shanghai Daily, said the Hangzhou Special page is bound to lead more visitors from home and abroad to travel and live in Hangzhou, and will serve as an effective platform for foreign exchanges.
