Haze for 29 days

HANGZHOU had 29 days of haze in October, making it one of the most polluted months of the year in terms of air quality.

The PM2.5 readings of airborne particles smaller than 2.5 micrometers exceeded 250 micrograms per cubic meter on Sunday - more than three times the standard for good air quality, which is 75 micrograms per cubic meter, according to the Hangzhou Environment Protection Bureau.

Purple warning lights came on in all three PM2.5 monitoring stations across Hangzhou - the second-highest level in the six-color alert system, meaning serious air pollution.

That means that people who suffer from health conditions such as pulmonary problems may want to stay indoors whenever possible.

A cold front brought pollution and a haze, and the city has also been under a static front with only light winds and high humidity, which has helped trap pollution, the bureau said.

The city is expected to become chillier this week, with the arrival of more cold fronts in the area, according to the Hangzhou Meteorological Bureau.
