Hot music in the chilly winter

TWO major pop bands -- Fahrenheit and Super Band -- and Brazil-born jazz singer Lisa Ono will warm up the Hangzhou winter. Yao Minji chills out.

Hangzhou not only draws tourists with its beautiful scenery but also music fans who flock to its pop concerts that warm up the chilly winter.

The Taiwanese boy band Fahrenheit performs on December 12, while Chinese Super Band and Brazil-born Japanese jazz singer Lisa Ono both perform on December 24.

Debuting at the end of 2005, Fahrenheit has become one of the most popular Chinese boy groups, attracting hundreds of fans to airports and stages wherever they go. The group's name Fahrenheit comes from the distinctive personalities of the four members, each representing a different temperature and season of the year.

Calvin Chen, the gentleman with a master's degree who always smiles, is the warm spring. Jiro Wang, the funniest member and former rock band vocalist, represents the exciting and hot summer. Wu Chun, the Brunei native who has played handsome royalty in TV dramas, stands for mysterious and graceful autumn. The youngest, Aaron Yan, who often appears as a cool guy, is for chilly winter.

All in their early 20s, the four are typical "flowery boys" with pleasing looks and fashionable style. Though their singing and dancing have often been criticized as inadequate, the number of their fans is increasing, especially teenage girls.

When the group arrived in Hangzhou last week to promote the upcoming concert, more than 200 fans welcomed them at the airport. The enthusiastic fans kept pushing forward toward their idols, crushing some glass partitions in the airport. No one was hurt.

Besides pretty pop singers, some veterans are coming to Hangzhou. A Christmas Eve concert will be staged by the newly formed Super Band of pop music heavyweights. It will be their second visit to Hangzhou.

The four-piece band was launched last September by 55-year-old singer/songwriter Lo Ta-yu, 51-year-old singer/producer Jonathan Lee, 49-year-old pop singer Emil Chau and 35-year-old rocker Chang Chen-yue.

All have made contributions to Chinese pop music. Lo, regarded as the "father of Chinese pop music," was one of the most popular singers in the 1980s and early 1990s. Many of his songs have become classics and are frequently recorded by today's pop singers.

Lee wrote and produced songs for almost all the best-selling female Chinese pop singers in the 1990s. Chau was one of the best-selling pop singers in the 1990s, and the youngest, Chang, has always been known for his independent musician's attitude.

Today's entertainment business is filled with pretty faces, but these three middle-aged guys and a 35-year-old were one of the highlights of the famous CCTV Spring Festival Gala early this year.

Since then, their music has swept the nation and their concerts have been sold out.

Another major musician to tour Hangzhou is the Brazil-born Japanese jazz singer Lisa Ono. The 47-year-old songstress has popularized bossa nova in Japan and is one of the most famous Japanese stars in China. She will stop in Hangzhou after her concerts in Beijing and Shanghai.
