Inflation rises 2.1%
Hangzhou posted a higher inflation rate in July because of rising food prices, the local statistics bureau said last Tuesday. The city’s consumer price index rose 2.1 percent year-on-year in July, compared with the provincial average of 1.6 percent. Food prices, which account for nearly one third of the CPI basket, increased 2.2 percent in July after dropping for four consecutive months. The cost of fresh vegetables jumped 13.2 percent as a result of big storms. An 8.1 percent jump in pork prices also accounted for the higher inflation rate, the bureau said.
