Clearer skies

Hangzhou residents enjoyed more blue skies while the city recorded fewer smoggy days last year, according to a report issued by the Hangzhou Environmental Protection Bureau recently.

The city registered 129 smoggy days last year, 31 days fewer than in 2009, the report said.

Last year, the city banned 12,615 polluting vehicles from the road, effectively cutting 9,441 tons of carbon dioxide. Local environmental authorities also extended its monitoring network to 29 new areas and eight large construction sites.

Pollution from inhalable particles has been a major factor for the city's poor air quality. Most of the inhalable particles come from vehicle emissions and construction sites.

Electric taxi fire

All of Hangzhou's 30 electric taxis stopped operation on Monday after one of them caught fire after overheating earlier that day. The operator of Hangzhou's electric taxi fleet, Hangzhou New Energy Taxi Company, decided to temporarily pause operation of all e-cabs until an effective solution is put forward.

The taxi caught fire after overheating at around 3pm Monday on Wulin Road. The driver and passengers escaped from the car promptly and called the police. The fire was put out 10 minutes later by firemen. Engineers and officials from Hangzhou New Energy Taxi Company and the manufacturer of the electric taxi reached the scene shortly after and started an investigation. The cause of the accident, however, is still unknown.

The electric taxi fleet debuted in Hangzhou in January. The city became one of the first 13 pilot cities in China to develop new energy automobiles in 2009. According to the city's original plan, the number of electric taxis operating in Hangzhou is to be increased to 200 by the end of this year.
