Monet breaks record

Claude Monet’s “The Chapel of Our Lady of Grace at Honfleur” became the most expensive painting sold at an auction in China on December 27 at 20.7 million yuan.

A total of 12 pieces were sold during China’s first sale of Western masterpieces for 52.8 million yuan in Hangzhou, Xiling Yinshe Auction Co said.

The sale also featured a still life “Giorgio Morandi” that sold for 9.43 million yuan, and Paul Gauguin’s “Two Cows under a Tree” for 6.67 million yuan.

In more than 30 sessions, over 4,600 items including calligraphy, inkstones, seals, jade sculptures, paintings, clocks, watches and coins were put up for auction.
