New Book Club Roost For English Readers
JIANG Aijun, owner of Hangzhou Xiaofeng Bookstore, has been busy preparing for collaborations with Penguin Books.
This month the large international publishing group from the United Kingdom will set up its first Hangzhou reading club, Penguin Roosts, at the Zhejiang University branch of the small private-owned chain store Xiaofeng.
Penguin started opening reading clubs in Shanghai, Beijing and Chongqing last year to get book lovers together and promote original English-language books.
It has always been difficult for small bookstores like Xiaofeng to survive despite its reputation among teachers and students. Jiang says Penguin would provide the reading club with advance copies of their original English books - an offer only made in China. This means they could offer at this time books that will be generally available next February.
"I want to gradually increase the number of limited classic books for a small group of readers, unlike offerings of best-sellers everywhere. We want to establish our own characteristics and exclusive resources as a bookstore striving to survive," says Jiang.
Through this reading club, book lovers in Hangzhou will be able to get a taste of original English books shortly after they are published abroad.
The club will host book-related literary events, such as readings.
