New towns planned
Zhejiang University has teamed up with Xihu District to build Zijin Maker Town and make it a research and development center for industries with elite researchers and engineers from around the world. The town will encircle the university’s Zijingang campus.
The town will become a place for students to do internships and launch start-ups while entrepreneurs can also open new businesses.
It plans to attract some 200 enterprises in the first year, commercialize over 1,000 technologies and help about 10 companies go public.
The Xihu District government is building several towns with different features to boost the local economy. They include Xixi Valley, Cloud Valley, Yunxi Town and Longwu Tea Town.
Xixi Valley will be a hub of Internet financing companies, including Alibaba Group’s MYbank and Zheshang Venture Capital. Yunxi Town will have a 12,000-square-meter exhibition venue capable of holding 6,000 people.
