Patent pioneer
HANGZHOU has joined another 22 cities in China as among the nation's first model cities for protecting intellectual property rights.
The city applied for 40,892 patents last year - 29,251 of which have been authorized, up 10.45 percent on 2010, Shao Zhanwei, the city's mayor, announced over the weekend.
Hangzhou ranks first among China's provincial capitals with a total of 13,204 effective patents boasting market values last year. Sales of patent products have hit 169.4 billion yuan.
Zhejiang University in Hangzhou leads colleges and universities nationwide with regards to the number of patents.
And the upward trend looks set to continue. The city applied for 24,572 patents in the first half of this year, an increase of 43.56 percent compared to the same period in 2011.
