People express their love for the city through photography
THERE are tens of thousands of reasons for a tourist to fall in love with Hangzhou, not to mention its residents. Sometimes it's hard to resist the pleasant and beautiful city crowned "tourism heaven."
From dawn to dusk, the famed West Lake is packed with people capturing the hues that vary throughout the day. Among them, a girl with the online name "Miner" shot a photo of the lake's sunset on the Broken Bridge about 4pm earlier this month. She then uploaded the photo to kpkpw.com as her entry in the third Hangzhou Civilians' Photograph Festival.
The festival, which begins today, offers an opportunity for ordinary people to express their love of the city with their cameras as the theme this year is "I Love Hangzhou."
Today also marks the opening of the Hangzhou International Information Exchange Center (Hi Center).
Those who live in Hangzhou, or are simply fascinated by the enchanting city, are all eligible to express their love of the city using cameras or mobile phones.
Both renowned photographers and amateur snappers are invited to capture the city's splendor with their lens and show off their works.
It encourages people to trace the vestige of Hangzhou and its residents' daily lives, which will form a representation of the city's various aspects. The ancient city whose history dates back 5,000 years is known for its well-preserved cultural heritage sites, abundant natural resources, dreamlike scenery, tranquil lifestyle and thriving economic development.
The festival runs until Monday at the Museum of the West Lake Exposition on Beishan Road.
The event features large-scale public involvement. Its opening is announced by ordinary residents and visitors are invited to vote for their favorite photos as well as the image they think is the most interesting every day.
Free photographic lectures will be held, and an exhibition themed "Hangzhou in expats' eyes" is also on the agenda.
The festival aims to showcase a vivid image of Hangzhou's present to the world and promote cultural exchange. It is hosted by Hangzhou Municipal Information Office and co-hosted by the Hangzhou International Information Exchange Center.
The center, which nestles in the west part of Hangzhou, inside the Museum of the West Lake Exposition on 40 Beishan Road, regularly releases information about the capital city of Zhejiang Province, conducts international cultural exchanges, organizes academic and technological discussions, and hosts automobile and fashion shows as well as financial conferences to strengthen international communication.
The Hangzhou Municipal Information Office and the Organizing Committee of the Hangzhou West Lake International Expo take charge of the operation of the center, with Shanghai Daily as a partner.
The annual event is very popular. When the festival made its debut in 2008, more than 26,000 eager residents flocked to the Zhejiang Exhibition Hall during the three days to visit the exhibition with the theme of "celebration of China's 30 years of reform and opening up to the outside world." More than 4,000 votes were cast for photos that were deemed to represent Hangzhou best and four free lectures were given.
The second festival, paying tribute to the 60th anniversary of the founding of People's Republic of China, also witnessed overwhelming enthusiasm.
More than 20,000 photos were submitted and nearly 1,000 photos were selected and displayed. They reflected the dramatic transformation of the city.
