Piano Prince from Croatia

CROATIAN popular pianist Maksim Mrvica is often welcomed as a rock star in his global travels and now is making his China debut. He will give a concert at Hangzhou Stadium on December 5.

Mrvica, marketed as the "Croatian Piano Prince," is known for talent, good looks (fashionable highlighted hair) and sensitive performances. His China tour includes 12 cities.

His album, "The Greatest Hits," was issued in China last month. He has already given a successful performance at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center.

Mrvica, aged 34, was born in Sibenik, Croatia, and began to play piano at the age of eight - considered a late start for many. He was enrolled in the Sibenik State Music Academy where he dreamed of being a concert pianist.

He entered his first competition in 1993, when he was 18 and charmed the judge and audience by just showing up. But when he performed, everyone was stunned by his virtuosity and feeling. The judge halted the competition and immediately announced him the winner.

Mrvica's first crossover album for EMI Classical, "The Piano Player," was a huge success in 2003.

It went gold on the Chinese mainland, Indonesia and Malaysia, and platinum in Taiwan, Singapore and Croatia. Double platinum in Hong Kong.

"Variations I&II" in 2004 won him more accolades and fans. On a tour of Southeast Asia he was received like a rock star. He played his unique crossover music accompanied by strobe lights and video screens. In Japan he played purely classical music and was accompanied by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra.

His star rose even higher with the release of "Elektric" followed by a tour of Asia. He performed both with his band and the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. He made a solo piano concert tour of Asia in April 2007.

There is a Chinese lyrical version of Mrvica's "Claudine," written and sung by Edmond Leung.

"I was so captivated by Mrvica's performance of 'Claudine' that I asked his permission to do a lyrical version in Cantonese," says Leung.

In 2004, they collaborated on a bittersweet ballad called "Xin Wang Ai" ("Trust in Love").

His tour includes Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen (Guangdong Province), Qingdao (Shandong Province), Chengdu (Sichuan Province), Hangzhou (Zhejiang Province) and Chongqing.
