Poets join festival stars
THE annual Xihu Music Festival takes place at Hangzhou's Taiziwan Park this weekend, boasting not only an array of musical stars, but also famous poets and cosplay styling teams.
Dubbed "the most beautiful outdoor music festival in China," the festival has been held for six years, proving popular with locals and visitors alike.
The two-day event features a main stage - where nine acts from home and abroad will appear - and five affiliated stages.
Highlights include American alternative rockers Mercury Rev, "Godfather of Goth" Peter Murphy, and Mandarin pop singer Qu Wanting.
Mercury Rev formed in the late 1980s in Buffalo, New York, and over the years have moved from experimental and psychedelic rock to a melodic, ornate sound.
Peter Murphy is best known as lead singer of late 1970s and early 1980s Goth pioneers Bauhaus, though he has also brought his prominent cheekbones and baritone voice to solo albums such as "Deep" and "Love Hysteria."
Vancouver-based singer-songwriter Qu Wanting has recently released her first full-length studio album, "Everything in the World." A self-taught musician with a voice similar to American singer-songwriter Christina Perri, Qu's "You Exist in My Song," sung in Mandarin, has taken China by storm.
Other festival highlights include poetry sessions from 2-10pm.
Famed blind singer/poet Zhou Yunpeng, the icon of Chinese campus ballads, will collaborate with bands.
Festivalgoers can also request classic rock songs and Mandarin pop numbers from Chinese band T32 Band.
Cosplay stylist teams will be at the festival to give audience members a rock style makeover, while there will also be guitar lectures from Qinlu Instrument Store and a personal appearance by Japanese band Hell Quartet.
Last year, almost 10,000 people attended the event.
