Rare orchids shown at Guozhuang Pavilion

The recently concluded orchid exhibition at Guozhuang Pavilion by the West Lake attracted numerous visitors.
Visitors had the opportunity to admire the exquisite beauty of the orchids while engaging in workshops and cultural activities that celebrated the heritage and artistry surrounding these remarkable flowers.
This year, the exhibition featured world鈥檚 only chike hesu (璧ゅ３鑽风礌), a red shell variety that has been a Hangzhou treasure for generations. Chike hesu has crimson bud hulls, green petals and a white labellum. It had not bloomed since 1978 until it did so again in 2018, creating a sensation in the orchid community.
Xu Ye has been caring for the flower since the 1980s. He spent over a decade researching soil and fertilizers and replacing the planting soil to nourish the roots, culminating in its bloom in 2018.
This year, the flower has already produced twin blossoms on the same stalk, a phenomenon that previously occurred only in 2019 and 2022.
To mark the Year of the Snake, Xu also explored the country鈥檚 orchid cultivation bases and discovered the 鈥淕olden Snake Lord鈥 variety, a spring orchid with snake-scale-like golden speckles on the leaves and petals.
It was another highlight of the exhibition. The two golden-hued varieties, Jin Bang (閲戞, Golden List) and Jin Hong (閲戣櫣, Golden Rainbow), represented prosperity for the Chinese New Year.
The exhibition also included a Lantern Festival celebrating intangible cultural treasures, where visitors experienced centuries-old crafts and savored local cuisine.
Artist Song Shenglin鈥檚 papercut series, 鈥10 Scenes of the West Lake,鈥 captivated audiences with its delicate craftsmanship and attention to detail. Each piece depicted the serene beauty and cultural richness of the West Lake, bringing to life its legendary landscapes and historical significance.
