River trash
SANITATION workers remove an average of 77 tons of rubbish from local rivers a day, the Hangzhou Urban Management Commission said last week.
About 1,500 workers are scooping up floating trash from rivers daily. The rivers total over 1,000 kilometers in length and 26 square kilometers in surface area. The rubbish includes plastic bottles, polymer food containers and beer bottles.
“I need to make two trips a day with a tricycle to transport the trash,” said a sanitation worker surnamed Zhao.
He takes care of the Shangtang River, boating up and down the banks five times a day. Summer is the worst season as it is very hot and humid, Zhao said.
The commission is asking Hangzhou residents to develop good habits and help keep the city’s rivers clean.
