Showcasing people's culture

CHINESE delights and the unique folk arts in the Hangzhou area will be on offer when the People's Culture Activity Center and the Intangible Cultural Heritage Center open in three years. Everything from folk opera to fashion will be displayed and visitors can take part. Pan Zheng reports.

Hangzhou's Olympic and Exhibition City will not only create grand stadiums, but also feature a People's Cultural Activity Center and an Intangible Cultural Heritage Preservation Center.

The people's culture center north of the main stadium will cover 2.5 hectares; the intangible heritage center east of the stadium will cover 1.5 hectares.

Construction is expected to be completed within three years. The entire Olympic and Exhibition City covers 150 hectares.

Hangzhou residents and visitors will not only be able to watch sports events and performances but also enjoy other activities, such as operas, music, comics and fashion.

People's Cultural Activity Center

This comprehensive cultural entertainment center with 10 zones will appeal to people of all ages, from children to the elderly.

The zones include Display Street, DreamWorks, Shining Catwalk, Comic World, Opera Center, Magic Fantasy, Virtual Telestudio, Modern Stage, Folk Culture Garden and Children's Paradise.

Display Street is a corridor running through the center with displays on each side. Patterns will be project on the ceiling and visitors can choose the design.

DreamWorks is designed for music lovers, providing several halls of around 100 square meters each for creating and rehearsal. A concert hall will cover 300 square meters.

Shining Catwalk is a standard catwalk for fashion shows, not only for models but also for ordinary people.

Comic World will be a communications platform for comics and animation fans. Frequent displays of works and cosplay are planned.

Opera Center is comprised of three small theaters, each seating 100 people.

Magic Fantasy is especially designed for folk magicians, and magic lovers can learn some tricks.

Virtual Telestudio includes a well-equipped television studio and an auditorium of 300 seats, where people can watch production of a TV show.

Modern Stage has the most advanced multimedia facilities, mechanized stage and LED screens. It seats 500 people for concerts, dramas and live shows.

Folk Culture Garden covering 1,000 square meters is divided into parts for painting, embroidery, paper-cutting and ceramics.

Children's Paradise covering almost half a hectare is a comprehensive indoor playground, not only offering rides but also brain storming events.

Intangible Cultural Heritage Center

Intangible cultural heritage will be displayed in many ways and most are linked to the local culture of Hangzhou.

In Overall Vision, many local customs will be displayed on a huge screen, such as marriages and official visits.

Folk artists will perform and demonstrate their skills.

A wax museum will present statues of famous and outstanding folk artists. In front of their statues, masterworks will be displayed.

Both centers will offer training courses in folk culture, including paper-cutting, folk music and the tea ceremony.
