Shutterbugs paying tribute to city鈥檚 beauty

PROFESSIONAL and amateur photographers from around the world shared about 2,000 of their pictures with the public last week at the 9th Hangzhou Citizen Photography Festival.
Photos displayed outdoors on Gongchen Bridge over the Grand Canal were selected from Hangzhou residents for the theme “We are one big family.” Qiaoxizhi Street housed a second exhibition space that showcased work from local professionals. The work of foreign photographers taken in the city during the 1980s was displayed at Fan Museum.
The highlight of the festival was Cheng Fang and Cheng Xiao’s “Time-portrayed Hangzhou,” an eight-minute video showing Hangzhou’s landscape and development using time-lapse photography. It took them five years and 18,000 pictures to complete, which in return helped them get thousands of clicks online.
Organizers selected the nine best moments from the video and printed them on postcards, which were officially published at the opening ceremony of the festival.
In addition to gorgeous photos, the festival also held free lectures on photography. Participants were able to make their postcards with their photos and could mail them to friends.
Hangzhou’s beautiful scenery has led many local residents to pick up photography. Some of these amateur shutterbugs are very skilled and have a keen eye for detail. Since its debut in 2008, the festival has collected around 100,000 photos, of which 10,000 have been displayed.
