Soaking it all in at hot spring resorts
HOT tea, a hot spring, fresh fruit and fresher air. Ah yes. It’s all less than two hours from several cities in Zhejiang Province.
Hangzhou, Jiaxing, Shaoxing and Huzhou form a circle on the map and the tourism bureaus in each city are encouraging residents to hop in their cars and explore what each one has to offer.
Those who live in Shanghai will also find each city has distinctive attractions and are close enough for a weekend sojourn.
Today Shanghai Daily introduces two hot springs and a large lake while last week we profiled two wetlands and two ancient towns.
Qingchi Hot Spring
The hot spring in Jiaxing gets almost 3,000 tons of thermal water everyday and oddly enough was only discovered two years ago. The water is 64 degrees Celsius and is piped to a huge pool, where it is cooled naturally before being transferred to smaller pools.
The water smells like rotten eggs due to the sulfur dioxide content. The water also contains iron, fluorine, bromine, lithium, iodine and boron.
In total, 27 outdoor pools of differing sizes are hidden among the greenery. Some pools have rose petals added while others feature sachets of Chinese herbs.
Pay extra for a massage by a Thai masseuse — pure indulgence.
Address: Intersection of Puxin Line and Jiahu Road
Price: 198 yuan per person at the hot spring, 118 yuan online at

Huzhou Sheraton Hot Spring Resort
The luxury hotel near Taihu Lake is equipped with a spa center with 101 hot spring pools, 39 hot spring villas, and 68 spa rooms.
The villas, of course, are quite private and guests can take a hot spring bath at any time without being watched. The main part of the hotel’s hot spring area features 26 pools that are well-shielded by tropical plants.
It’s easy to hear a pool by following the sound of water, but it’s not easy to see them because of the broad palm leaves that block people’s view.
The hotel is shaped like a ring. When reflected in Taihu Lake, the two combine to make a perfect 8, a lucky number in China.
Address: 5858 Huzhou Rd, Huzhou
Nanbei Lake
Nanbei Lake claims to be the “only scenic site in the country that has hills, the sea and a lake.”
Situated in Haiyan County, Jiaxing City, the huge site covers 45 square kilometers north of Hangzhou Bay.
Baiyun Pavilion is the best spot for views of the entire lake as well as a part of the sea. Another spectacle is to see the sun and moon appear in one place at the same time, at sunset on the first day of the 10th lunar month of the Chinese calendar (this year it fell on November 8).
Visitors can bike around the lake, catch sunrises or sunsets, go for a hike, try rock climbing or visit temples. When in season, there’s also a chance to pick oranges or dig bamboo shoots.
Usually it takes people at least two days to finish touring the scenic site.
Local delicacies include fish and shrimp from the lake, abalone from the sea, as well as chicken and lamb.
