Springtime art shows bloom near West Lake

IT'S the perfect season to visit Hangzhou for the West Lake, Longjing tea, spring flowers and also art.

The city, though not large, is home to the China Academy of Art, which is considered one of the leading art universities in China. It also offers several art museums and galleries, both private and commercial, most of them around the West Lake.

In the early spring those galleries begin their exhibitions, offering more options to people touring the lake area.

Shanghai Daily visits four exhibitions underway near the West Lake.

Sanshang Contemporary Art Gallery

Sculpture, photos, canvas

A large art installation looks like an unusual musical instrument: The left part looks like the neck of a gold-gilt guitar, the right part is shaped like a guqin, a traditional Chinese zither with seven strings. The sound is metallic, but mellow and serene.

And it can be played.

The installation by Lin Gang is one of several "musical instruments." His works are part of an exhibition that incudes works by photographer Liu Gangqiang and painter Huang Dayou.

The three artists are graduates of the China Academy of Art and noted in their fields.

Curator Chen Zijin says the three brainstormed to come up with an exhibition expressing original feelings about nature and natural objects.

Lin, chairman of the Hangzhou Sculpture Academy, creates installations by combining natural and man-made materials into stringed musical instrument-like works. For example, he creates a steel and marble matou (horse's head) string instrument; a large steel and decayed urheen (two-string instrument), and a steel and glass cello.

"I believe that in everybody's heart there is an instrument that only is played for yourself," says Lin.

Huang Dayou's oils on canvas look like traditional Chinese ink-wash and watercolor paintings. Huang says he paints around 10 layers to create the ink-wash effect.

Photographer Liu Gangqiang's works include black-and-white photographs of horses running across freezing grasslands and of silver birch trees.

Zhejiang Art Museum

Works of Chen Dayu

Of the great names in the 20th century is Chen Dayu (1912-2001), a student of Qi Baishi (1864-1967) and the inventor of a school of free-hand bird-and-flower painting.

Chen was also a poet, calligrapher and seal carver who combined all his skills in his artwork.

The current exhibition features 140 works, mostly bird-and-flower paintings, some landscapes and calligraphy. Four halls of the museum are devoted to his works.

Bird-and-flower painting refers to natural subject matter that also includes small animals and various insects in natural settings. Chen's color and composition are bold and unique. In many paintings dense ink and bright, heavy colors are combined. He sometimes combines freehand and fine, detailed work.

Five of Chen's paintings were recently donated to the museum by his family.

Inna Art Space

Female artist solo exhibition

A solo exhibition by modern painter Zheng Wenxin is underway in the Inna Contemporary Art Space, tucked away on Hefang Street, just meters from the West Lake.

Zheng exhibits three paintings, each a combination of many shapes and views; from one angle part of the painting appears to be a swimming pool. From another angle it appears to be a crosswalk or train station.

"I deliberately depict props and scenes that might appear ridiculous, but I like to add uncertain feelings to them, so that people think about what is 'safe'," Zheng says.
