Student's trick photography
CAPTURING the blue sky, green trees, West Lake and a man performing a somersault, this group of pictures are the work of William Morrison, a 23-year-old American studying Chinese language in Hangzhou.
Morrison from California started learning jujitsu at the age of nine, and went on to learn several other kinds of martial arts, including kung fu, taekwondo and capoeira.
Four years ago, he began to take an interest in tricking, a relatively new underground alternative sport movement combining martial arts, gymnastics and other physical activities, with backflips, hyperswipes and 720 triples, the names of typical tricking moves.
Two weeks ago, the Zhejiang University of Technology student received a homework assignment "to take photos of the West Lake," and conjured up these creative pictures.
"I wanted my homework to be unique and interesting," says Morrison. "And these photos are screenshots of videos I took."
With a very ordinary digital video camera and without a tripod, he circled the lake, chose his spots, positioned the camera, pressed record, ran in front of the lens and tumbled.
Morrison will leave Hangzhou in June, but is currently looking for local people interested in tricking to swap skills.
