Subway carriages

THREE train carriages assembled in Hangzhou for Metro Line 2 will make their debut early next month.

Ten more carriages for Line 2 will be assembled this year by CSR Hangzhou Rolling Stock Co Ltd in its Hangzhou Airport Economic Zone plant in Xiaoshan District.

The main parts of the carriages are manufactured by CSR Puzhen Rolling Stock Co Ltd in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province. After they are assembled in Hangzhou, workers install the floors, ceilings, lights, air-conditioners, seats, signal systems and finally the wheels.

The carriages are then sent to a debugging workshop for tests. Finally, new carriages will be tested on a 1.1-kilometer track where they will reach a maximum speed of 80kph.

CSR Hangzhou mainly assembles Metro carriages, but it is also a maintenance center.

The plant cost 1.6 billion yuan (US$239 million) and covers 300,150 square meters in Xiaoshan.

The Hangzhou plant has an annual capacity of 200 carriages but this will expand to 300 after phase two is built. Carriages for lines 4, 5 and 6 will also be assembled here.

The city’s subway network is expected to reach 190 kilometers by the end of next year. The Y-shaped Line 1 is the only one now open. It stretches 48 kilometers.
