Subway expansion

HANGZHOU will put three new subway sections into service this year. They are the northwest extension and second phase of Metro Line 2, and the south extension of Metro Line 4, officials said.

The northwest extension of Metro Line 2 runs from Qingchun Square Station to Fengtan Road Station, across downtown Hangzhou. It is scheduled to open before the end of June.

The second phase of Line 2 goes from Fengtan Road Station up north to Dufu Village Station, while the south extension of Line 4 starts from Yongjiang Road Station and ends at Puyan Road Station.

Both are expected to start service later this year.

The three new subway sections will enlarge the city’s Metro system by 35 kilometers and 27 stations. Last year, Hangzhou Metro transported 269 million passengers, averaging 770,000 a day.

This year, work will continue to build 134 kilometers of subway line for Metro lines 4, 5 and 6. Line 5 alone will have 15 stations.

Meanwhile, work is underway to build an international flight terminal at Xiaoshan International Airport and a brand-new Hangzhou South Railway Station. Urban planners will also select a site for the planned Hangzhou West Railway Station.

In 2022, about 75 percent of the city’s population will travel by public transport, bike or foot. Eighty percent of commuters will be able to walk to a bus station within five minutes from their home or office.
