Swedish ballet

SWEDEN'S Cullberg Ballet, a major contemporary dance company, will make its China debut in the Hangzhou Theater on May 25 and 26. The performance will also celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations between Sweden and China.

The ballet was founded in 1967 by the modern dancer and pioneer choreographer Birgit Cullberg.

China-US hoops

The All-Star Basketball Competition between China and the United States will kick off on Sunday at the Huanglong Sports Center.

Glenn Robinson, Gary Payton, Mitch Richmond, Voshon Lenard and Michael Curry from the United States will give a demonstration.

The China team includes head coach Wang Zhizhi, and players Liu Wei and Zhu Fangyu.

Taiwan treasures

Exhibits of Taiwan's culture, natural history and geology are on display in the second phase of Lian Heng Memorial Hall, which opened on May 2.

The second phase features a Taiwan modern sculpture area, Yayan Library, Qingquanju Tea House and other exhibition areas, all with exhibits transported from Taiwan.

The first phase of the memorial hall in the Agate Temple has been open for a year and a half, visited by more than 90,000 people from around the world.

Better abattoirs

Hangzhou is cleaning up and upgrading its slaughterhouses under a new policy. Bonuses will be awarded to those abattoirs that pass three levels of inspection - 100,000 yuan (US$14,647) for a one-star slaughterhouse, 150,000 yuan for a two-star rating and 200,000 yuan for three-star certificate.

Green tourism

Hangzhou's first low-carbon tourism center will be built in Dingqiao Town, Jianggan District, with an investment of 2 billion yuan (US$293 million).

The 470-hectare area will feature environmentally friendly hotels using solar power, bicycle paths, electric cars and cattle carts. An island park will be built and feature southern China-style architecture.

3G reading

A free 3G reading room has opened in Hangzhou Public Library recently. Said to be one of the first in China, it combines mobile information technology and public library facilities. More than 60,000 books are available, and the number is expected to reach 150,000 by the end of the year.

Good-bye garbage

The Huajiachi Garbage Transfer Station in Jinlanchi Residential Area has been closed, ending 20 years of smelly history. Closure is part of a move to gradually close all of the central city's 66 garbage depots.
