Theater of delights expected as Hangzhou International Festival nears

THE Hangzhou International Festival raises its curtain on September 16 with a selection of 11 dramas by Chinese, Swiss and British troupes.

Swiss troupe Ohne Rolf opens the festival, which runs until September 29, with “Blattrand.” The play has been staged more than 2,000 times and on this occasion will be performed at Hangzhou Grand Theater.

Other plays include “How a Man Crumbled” by Clout Theater from the UK and “The Conquest of Happiness,” the latest work by Meng Jinghui, one of China’s most famed theater directors. Meng is also the festival’s founder and artistic director.

Customers can purchase a set of four tickets to four shows, excluding “The Conquest of Happiness” for 300 yuan. A set of five tickets for all the shows can be purchased for either 480 yuan or 580 yuan. Call (0571) 8770-3711 for tickets.

“Blattrand”

Details: After performing in German, English, and French more than 2,000 times, the two men of Onhe Rolf will stage the show in Chinese. Since they do not speak Chinese they will use 1,000 cards with Chinese characters.

“The Conquest of Happiness”

Troupe: Two Dings and One Xiao (China)

Date: September 21-22, 7:30pm

Venue: Zhejiang Drama Ensemble

Director: Meng Jinghui

Details: Meng Jinghui’s latest work is adapted from the book “Conquest of Happiness” by Bertrand Russell.

Tickets: 180-380 yuan

“How a Man Crumbled”

Troupe: Clout Theater (United Kingdom)

Date: September 20-21, 7:30pm

Venue: Hangzhou Grand Theater

Address: 39 Xinye Rd

Details: The four actors from Russia, France, Turkey and Scotland won an audience award at the Physical Festival 2012. Scotsman magazine says the play is “ridiculous, hilarious, baffling and unnerving.”

“Only One Man”

Date: September 27-28, 7:30pm

Venue: The Lesser Theater

Director/actor: He Yufan

Details: This one-man show tells the story of a divorced man. The director has been invited to perform at many international theater festivals.

“Hamlet”

Date: September 24, 7:30pm

Venue: The Lesser Theatre

Director: Su Xiaogang

Details: This play attempts to break people’s stereotype about men.
