Thriving centenarians

There are 607 centenarians living in Hangzhou, 32 more than last year, the local civil affairs bureau said.

Cai Zangyuan, 107, is the city’s oldest resident. She was born in April 1908, the year Emperor Guangxu and Empress Dowager Cixi died. Cai now lives in Xiaoshan District.

Among the 10 eldest, five are 106 years old and two are 105. Eight of them are women. Xiaoshan has 103 centenarians, the most of the city’s districts.

The number of centenarians in Hangzhou has climbed from 489 in 2013 to 575 in 2014 and to 607 this year.

The oldest person in the city’s history, Liu A’er, died early this year at the age of 113. Born in 1902 in Shaoxing, Liu gave birth to three sons and two daughters. She was 36 when her husband died.
