Toll-free holiday

THE coming eight-day National Day holiday is highly likely to see traffic surge by at least 20 percent on highways around Hangzhou, as passenger cars will be exempt from road tolls for the first time, said the Zhejiang Province transport authority.

The heaviest traffic is expected on Sunday and October 6-7, the beginning and end of the holiday.

Passenger cars with seven seats or less and motorcycles will be exempt from road tolls from September 30 to October 7.

The plan was approved in early August by the State Council, China's Cabinet, and is effective during major Chinese holidays, including Chinese New Year, Qingming Festival, Labor Day and National Day.

As a result, the country's estimated 236 million licensed drivers will be exempt from about 10 billion yuan (US$1.58 billion) in highway tolls during the Golden Week holiday.

Motorists have long complained that toll gates cause traffic jams during national holidays. Tolls take up 30-40 percent of expenses incurred in driving to destinations throughout China.
