Tourism conference

A China-Japan-South Korea tourism conference will be held from tomorrow through next Tuesday in Hangzhou and Huzhou in Zhejiang Province.

Last year, Zhejiang attracted 656,000 tourists from Japan and 623,900 from South Korea, according to Xu Peng, vice director of Zhejiang Tourism Bureau. Japan and South Korea are the top two sources of foreign tourists in the province.

The first China-Japan-Korea Tourism Cooperation Guideline will be issued at the conference. The three countries will also sign the Hangzhou Joint Statement.

The Urban Star

Two old plants in Hangzhou are to be renovated into an international tourism complex called The Urban Star.

Hangzhou Oxygenerator Plant and Hangzhou Boiler Plant on Dongxin Road will be turned into a new landmark in Hangzhou. The Urban Star area will combine museums, exhibitions, hotels, entertainment, gourmet restaurants and other functions. It will cover an area of over 400,000 square meters.

Several new serviced apartments and boutique hotels will be built to support the project.

The complex will also be the new home for some of the temporary pavilions at Shanghai Expo Shanghai. The "Germany and China ? Moving Ahead Together" pavilion has already signed a donation contract.

Hotline for workers

The Hangzhou Trade Union recently opened a training class for 27 volunteers who will provide psychological counseling over the telephone to Hangzhou workers.

There are more than 2.5 million employees in Hangzhou and 60 percent are from other provinces. The Trade Union and Psychological Health Association set up a counseling hotline to help them solve problems and deal with the stresses of urban life.

The hotline - (0571) 8899-5151 - will launch next week. It will be available Monday to Friday (except for national holidays) from 7pm to 9:30pm.

Catching stray dogs

Hangzhou will continue to catch unlicensed and stray dogs in the city. From now through September 30, inspectors will check parks, plazas, communities and other public areas twice a week.

There are approximately 15,000 licensed dogs in Hangzhou's urban area, about 50 to 60 percent of the total dogs in the city.

High-speed railway

The Hangzhou-Nanjing express railway will open at the end of next year. The construction plan for the Hangzhou section of the railway is online for public comment until today.

The length of the railway is 249 kilometers. With a top speed at 250 kilometer per hour, the new train will travel between the two cities within 50 minutes, two hours less than by car. The route will include nine stops.

Hangzhou will also build a railway connecting Hangzhou North Station and Chengzhan Station.

Lights save energy

Hangzhou exported 5,457 batches of energy-saving lamps in the first half of this year, up 72 percent from the same period of 2009. The total value amounted to US$260 million, 63.5 percent higher than last year.

Many Western countries have issued new policies in recent years, urging citizens to substitute filament lamps with electricity-saving lights or LED lights. The Australian government was the first to announce its policy to stop using filament lamps in the country by 2010.

The European Union, Egypt, South Africa and South American countries have also made similar regulations, thus boosting the need for energy-saving lamps.

Water transport

Hangzhou will improve water transport with the addition of 42 ferries. The ferries will begin a trial run at the end of September.

The ferries are 16.5 meters long, 4.2 meters wide and 1.9 meters high from the water surface. The boats are much "flatter" than previous ones so they can go under bridges with low arches. They will be powered by electricity instead of diesel.

Some bridges on Zhonghe River have arches as low as 1.2 meters. Hangzhou Water Bus Company is trying to rebuild five electric ferries so that they will be able to clear these bridges.

Lots of babies

There were 28,167 babies born in the first half of this year, a slight increase from the same period last year.

The gender proportion was within the standard ratio of 103 (male) to 107 (female).
