West Lake expands

WEST Lake is 0.79 square kilometers larger than it was in 1964, according to a survey by the National Administration of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation.

Experts said the increase was the result of removing paddies west of the Yanggong Causeway.

West Lake now has a surface area of 6.39 square kilometers, about one-seventh larger than it was 50 years ago. The lake’s latest size was based on a calculation using aerial photographs taken during a geographic survey.

The survey carried out in 1964 showed West Lake had a surface of 5.6 square kilometers and an average depth of 1.8 meters.
