Where to go to beat the heat

HANGZHOU is known as one of the "furnaces" of China, and as temperatures soar day after day, relatively cooler small towns nearby are attracting visitors. They boast lower temperatures, water, beautiful scenery and comfortable - and affordable - accommodation. Here are five rural resorts.

Luci Village

This village in Tonglu City is considered one of the most beautiful villages around Hangzhou.

It was the first in the area to develop rural tourism around Hangzhou and many urban residents like to get away and enjoy the countryside and farmer's life.

The room rates average from 55-80 yuan per night. But for those who wish to stay in local earthen houses, the rate could be 800 yuan.

The village is just a few kilometers from the Fuchunjiang exit of Hangqian Expressway; it can also be reached by National Highway 320.

Jiupaojie farm village

This mountainous farm village was built in Jiapaojie scenic spot, named after nine magnificent waterfalls.

As it's in the mountains and close to water, the temperature is comfortable and most people do not need to use air-conditioners.

In addition to scenery, there's delicious rural food.

Rooms cost 60-80 yuan per night. Monthly rates are lower.

It can be reached by taking the Hangqian Expressway, then 05 Provincial Road in Qiandao Lake Town.

Green Lotus Pond Forest Park

In Jiande's Shouchang Town, Green Lotus Pond lies between Jiangnan Xuankong Temple and Qiandao (Thousand Island) Lake. Linqi Cavern is to the west.

The park is the biggest reserve in Asia for nanmu trees, used for woodworking and boat building because of their tall, straight trunks.

The average room rate is 80 yuan per person per night and 65 yuan per night if an entire month is booked.

Visitors can take the Hangqian Expressway, take the Changshou exit and drive for 20 minutes.

Lake Source Village, Yaokou Hamlet

The temperature in this scenic area of southern Fuyang City is 3-6 degrees Celsius lower than that in downtown.

The village is known for rural tourism and beautiful landscapes. It also includes Youyu Hall.

Drivers should take Hangqian Expressway or National Highway 320 and take the Zhongbu exit.

Visitors get a lot of value for their money, according to tourism officials. The average cost per person for one night is said to be around 50 yuan, including three meals.

Tianmu Mountain

Known as the "kingdom of trees," Tianmu Mountain has an average temperature below 22 degrees Celsius due to its geography and forest cover.

It is a national nature reserve and world biosphere reserve.

Tourism officials say the average cost of the journey is around 50-80 yuan (US$7.40-11.80) per day at most inns and 1,500 yuan for an entire month, including meals.

Located in Lin'an, the spot is 74 kilometers from Hangzhou. Those who drive should take the Hangwei Expressway and exit at Caoxi.

Besides Tianmu Mountain, other cool spots are the source of the Taihu Lake Zhexi Grand Canyon in the Lin'an area.
