Who you calling ‘62’?
IN celebration of the newly-minted observance Grown-up Day — which falls on June 2, one day after International Children’s Day — Chinese posted messages saying “We are 62!” or “We love 62!” on their social media accounts. These messages had a somewhat different significance in Hangzhou, however, where “62” in the local dialect can mean “stupid” or “uneducated.”
“When I was young, it was considered an insult to describe someone as ‘62.’ It’s really surprising to find ‘62’ becoming an expression of self-mockery,” said a middle-aged man surnamed Chen.
