Green balcony idea growing in popularity with residents

A BALCONY set up by the management of the Jiahe Community in Jiading has become popular with many residents. The 30-square meter “green balcony” is not only a place to kill time but they can also grow vegetables there.
Residents happily take care of the plants, from seeding to watering and weeding. Zhang Fengchun, who used to be a farmer, said the balcony reminds him of his happy farming days and is also a place where he can meet other residents.
The Jiahe Community is a new residential area in Jiading. With some senior residents missing the days when they worked in the fields, the community management decided to create the green balcony.
Volunteers look after the plants in the balcony daily while vegetable cooperatives provide seeds and free courses in growing techniques on a regular basis.
Freshly picked vegetables are distributed to volunteers and seniors in the community.
In the future, the community management plans to expand the initiative to residents’ own balconies, allowing more people to enjoy the benefits of growing their own vegetables.
