Book vouchers for underprivileged kids
THE Civil Affairs Bureau of Changning District recently launched a program to distribute book vouchers to children from poor families. The program is part of an effort to improve child welfare services ahead of the International Children’s Day.
Before June 1, 952 children from low-income families in the district received a 100-yuan (US$15.4) worth of book voucher, which can be used at all the stores of Shanghai Book City.
To create a literacy-rich environment for children, the district has been offering allowances and subsidies to them.
For summer holiday, the district’s civil affairs bureau will introduce underprivileged children to positive cultural materials including books, radio, films, television works, and songs and chants. Effort will also be made to improve children’s safety awareness and enrich their holiday life.
Changning is also enhancing community care and improving aiding system for underprivileged children. The district ensures minimum living allowance while providing educational and medical relief as well as holiday relief and temporary assistance for children from low-income families. The district ensures timely help to orphans, children with serious illnesses, prisoners’ children, and children of disabled people.
The bureau has also teamed up with local anti-drug department to actively promote anti-drug knowledge.
Emphasis has been put on caring and protecting children suffering from domestic violence and homeless children and improving education guidance, psychological counseling and medical services to them.
