Calling for ‘green’ Spring Festival
An environmental protection group run by students at Donghua University has announced a new initiative that calls for the public to have a “green” Chinese New Year celebration this month and avoid unnecessary waste.
The Green Handprint Environmental Protection Association has carried out activities on campus and in the community since it was established in 1999.
The director of the association, Wang Dishan, showed a bag of apples that are also greeting cards.
Volunteers drew smiley faces on the apples and will give them to other students on campus, thanking them for their support.
“Paper greeting cards waste money and paper. Using apples instead can express the same gratitude without creating waste,” Wang said.
The group has more ideas like using fallen leaves to make bookmarks, asking students to “adopt a plant” and encouraging everyone to be part of the green project by giving out seeds.
The association’s key task is encouraging the public to be part of the environmental protection effort. Only with a background supported by scientific facts can they help convince people.
The volunteers have shown a series of water purification procedures to residents to teach them the importance of protecting water resources and stop wasting. The association has more than 2,000 volunteers.
