Clinbrain uses big data to help city’s hospitals

Big data has the power to change the way hospitals operate.
However, Qin Xiaohong, vice president of Shanghai Clinbrain Information Technology Co Ltd, says hospitals don’t make the best use of information.
“Informationization has been taking place in the medical field for over two decades, yet most hospitals only use it for registering, collecting fees and checking a patient’s medical history. Big data can do so much more in the field of medical research and development,” Qin says.
Changning-based Clinbrain Information Technology collects and organizes big data in the medical field in order to make it more useful in clinical applications. The company is collaborating with major hospitals in Shanghai.
“Using big data technology we can use medical records to improve the clinical knowledge of doctors,” Qin says. “When doctors see patients they will have more support when making a diagnosis and recommending treatment.”
Informationization
Big data in medicine involves storing everything from surgical plans and results to various test reports and detailed symptoms patients have experienced. With advanced integrated information technologies, the company has built a search engine and a medical cases analysis system that hospitals can use.
Big data processes information and picks what is most appropriate for users based on their input. It becomes more reliable as more information is added to the system.
Clinbrain Information doesn’t rely solely on IT engineers and technicians. The company has also recruited doctors in clinical medicine and medical science.
“This is the difference between us and other big data processing companies,” Qin says. “With the support of professionals in medicine, we can provide better services.”
Big data can help less-experienced doctors diagnose patients better.
“A prestigious doctor must be experienced, however, sometimes it is difficult for them to communicate their experiences to interns,” Qin says. “This is where big data can help young doctors.”
Support from professionals
The computer can sort through the data to find similar cases and find out how doctors had cured a patient. The computer will suggest which medical tests are necessary, where to pay special focus and list possible adverse reactions based on the prescribed treatment.
Clinbrain’s computer system recently helped a hospital create a plan to reduce the possibility of pulmonary embolism when treating children diagnosed with lupus. Lupus is a systemic autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue.
“Many hospitals are still not using big data technology, so when they do the studies, doctors need to work hard to find previous cases. Without enough data, their studies are not diversified enough. Plus it’s hard to work on major projects that involve many medical sections,” Qin adds.
One characteristic of big data is that searches can be narrowed or expanded based on the needs of customers. Clinbrain has built a data-operating center for hospitals based on each facility’s conditions. They will provide reports regularly.
Liu Huanchun, president of Clinbrain Information Technology, says they can help hospitals become more efficient.
“We will know the average cost of hospitalization, which department charges the most money, how much medicine each doctor prescribes monthly and other small things,” Liu says. “This information will lead to better management of hospitals and stop bad practices by some doctors.”
Founded two years ago, the company is the leading brand in medical big data. Clinbrain is now expanding its services around China.
“I hope one day all hospitals can share their medical information with others so that the data is even more useful,” says Qin.
