Turkish diplomat sings praises of Changning
OZCAN Sahin is Turkish consul general in Shanghai. Shanghai Daily reporter Li Xinran recently sat down with Sahin to talk about working and living in Changning.
Q: Why did the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs pick Changning as the site for its Consulate General in Shanghai?
A: Consular missions have a multitude of functions. First, they represent the sending country in the host state with a view to protect the rights of their nationals. Besides, these missions serve as gateways to enhance mutual benefits. The location of a consular mission is chosen to best fulfill these functions. Changning in Shanghai has quality buildings, a high level of urban development, convenient transport and green landscapes. It is therefore one of the prime districts hosting many consular missions.
Q: What do you think about Changning as a place to work and live?
A: It is really nice. Changning gives the feeling of being in one of the busiest urban centers in Shanghai whilst keeping a close link with a well-preserved green environment. It also plays host to many international restaurants and shopping areas.
Q: What do you think is the best thing about Changning?
A: From a business perspective, ease of transport. Not only is this area well connected to Shanghai’s vast subway network, but also it is close to an airport and a train station, which makes life really easy. For a foreign family living in Shanghai, the quality of the air and proximity to central areas of attraction such as the zoo. Hosting a nice composition of expats and Chinese people is also a great asset.
Q: Do you have any advice for the future development of Changning?
A: I humbly believe that Changning is progressing on a solid path. Services are rapidly replacing other means of economic development. Infrastructure is rapidly improving. International connections are strong. We would like to keep working with our friends in Changning to link this beautiful district with appropriate places in Turkey.
Q: What sets Changning apart from other districts in Shanghai?
A: Firstly, Hongqiao Railway Station and Hongqiao International Airport are side by side. You did not see such close (transport) connections elsewhere in Shanghai or in many other parts of the world. Secondly, it is the district which has the largest green preservation in the city, among many other things. So Changning is truly remarkable.
Q: Many countries settle their consulate generals in Shanghai in Changning. Is this just a coincidence?
A: Absolutely not. In connection with your first question, this is a top location to host consular missions. It’s central, green, developed, well-connected, well-preserved and convenient. What else could you ask for?
Q: Any tips for foreigners who are new to Changning?
A: Changning has lots of cafes, restaurants, parks, etc. It has a lot to surprise you and make your stay comfortable. Do not hesitate to stroll through the area and discover beautiful places, meet nice people and have a wonderful experience with Chinese culture and people.
And come back soon!
