A world-class ecological island
SITUATED at the mouth of the Yangtze River that empties into the East China Sea, Chongming has become the world’s largest estuarine alluvial island after more than 1,400 years of rising tides and sinking earth.
Chongming is an important strategic space and ecological headland for the sustainable development of Shanghai.
It has always had an important role in Shanghai becoming a modern international metropolis, in the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta region, the green and high-quality development of Yangtze River Economic Belt and the evolution of a national ecological culture.
Chongming has made every effort to promote the integration of its nurtured and sustained ecology with economic and social development, open a new realm of world-class ecological island living, and pursue a direction toward “clear waters and green mountains.”
It aims to prioritize ecological and green development, learn from advanced experience at home and abroad and strive to create a new miracle of world-class ecological island construction in tune with a “full ecology, high quality and internationalization” development.
Shanghai has outlined a plan for the development of Chongming in the next 15 years as a world-class ecological island contributing to China’s program for “harmonious co-existence between man and nature.”
The plan builds on the latest achievements of the “joint efforts” of the Yangtze River Economic Belt and aims to explore new ways to realize the value of ecological products.
It is proposed that by 2035, a world-class Chongming ecological island will have become a “bridgehead” of green ecology, a “pioneer area” of green production, a “demonstration place” for green life, a national brand for ecological civilization, a benchmark for green development of the Yangtze River and a model for happy lives.
A “Chinese model” for the harmonious coexistence of man and nature, Chongming will become an important window to highlight China as an important participant, contributor and leader in the development of global ecological civilization, according to the 2035 plan.
