WHERE will you go on vacation? The answers may lie in spending some meaningful days on Chongming Island, learning on the road while enjoying its unique beauty.
As a national tourism zone lying at the estuary of the Yangtze River, Chongming will treat you to picturesque scenery, fresh agricultural produces, outdoor activities and rich cultural heritage.

Qian Xiaoju Citrus Fruit Farm
As a farm with a citrus theme, Qian Xiaoju is well known for its creativity and fun. Parents and children here celebrate every day as a Children’s Day.
The farm has developed many activities for them to observe the nature, explore the surroundings and improve their understandings of ecological and environmental protection.
Its specialty dishes, such as orange-sauce duck and orange-flavor mini hot pot, are cooked with organically grown vegetables.
Eighteen “creative boxes” have been turned into living quarters. Some rooms on the ground floor have a mini courtyard, while the deluxe king-size rooms on the first floor are equipped with viewing balconies.
Among the best features are the hotel corridor, which has a large flower bed, and the structural beams and columns of the warehouse that have been transformed into vertical greenery.
An American-style camp site is availed, featuring bunk-bed rooms catering to families who love to recall their school-day dorm living of upper and lower bunks.
Provisions include tent, canopy, mattress, floor mat, 24-hour hot water shower and other camping facilities.
Yingdong Resort
The resort in Yingdong Village, about 7 kilometers from the Yangtze River Tunnel Bridge, is one of the venues on the island to welcome the rising sun.
Its 32 villas offer a panoramic view of the East Lake of Yingdong Ecological Village, which can be reached within a short walk.
People can appreciate Chongming’s intangible cultural heritage items and folk handcrafts, such as bamboo-strip weaving and movable-type printing, at the folk custom experience center in the resort.
The center organizes various workshops such as aromatherapy and nougat making and hold activities varying from fishing to swimming and canoeing.
Rice cooked over an open fire gives a delicious ending to a day.
You can sing and dance around the campfire, sleep on the grass, watch an outdoor movie, or enjoy a sunset before gazing at a starry sky.
Xiang Duo Happy Farm
Billed as the first “happy farm” in Shanghai, Xiang Duo has 46 farm-stay properties, including eight villas and 12 luxury quarters with outdoor swimming pools.
Children embrace nature here with their parents. They can ride horses, feed rabbits and herd goats, fetch eggs from the chicken coop and have fun in the pool or on the sandy beach in hot summer. Or they can just sit quietly and enjoy the flow of time.
The lakeside restaurant serves local farmhouse dishes, and the bakery offers Western food.
Hyatt Regency Chongming
Hyatt Regency Chongming, the first international five-star low-density resort hotel in Shanghai, opened in March 2014 near the island’s Dongtan Wetland, adjacent to the Yangtze River estuary and overlooking the East China Sea.
It’s a pet-friendly hotel with a children’s park, a Hyatt campus and an equestrian club.
Chongming Intelligent Ecological Flower Garden
Covering more than 20 hectares, the garden is a key flower industry project introduced to Chongming after the 10th China Flower Expo was held here last year.
Built at a cost of 222 million yuan (US$31 million), the garden integrates flower research, horticulture production, exhibition and tourism.
The outdoor exhibition area on the north side of the garden features various new flower varieties.
In the seed factory, visitors can learn about the latest technology used in cultivating flower seeds. They can also make flower arrangements under the guidance of professionals.
Xisha Mingzhu Lake scenic spot
At the southwest end of Chongming Island, the Xisha Mingzhu Lake scenic area, comprising Mingzhu Lake and Xisha Wetland, is a national 4A tourist site.
Featuring wetlands, lakes and natural rainforest, it avails activities like fishing, boating and bird-watching.
There’s also an 8-kilometer sports track around the lake. Cycling in the sunset is amazing.
