New school kitchen helps feed learning
NUTRITIOUS and tasty meals are vital to a child's well-being and performance at school.
And a better environment for school meals has been created at Haiqiao Primary School in Shanghai's Chongming County, where 45 percent of pupils depend on the school kitchen for meals because their parents work away from the island.
The school's 130 pupils have benefited from Kraft Hope Kitchens, a charity project jointly initiated by Kraft Foods China and the China Youth Development Foundation.
Following Yongmei School in Minhang District, Haiqiao Primary School is the second school in Shanghai to benefit from the initiative.
Xu Mingsheng, head teacher at Haiqiao Primary School, has been at the school for 11 years.
He said the old school kitchen had become outdated, and praised the transformation. "Now, the kitchen's been whitewashed and all cooking equipment replaced with new items," Xu said. "It's really good."
The kitchen now boasts equipment such as rice steamers, a disinfecting cabinet and refrigerators and food storage shelves.
The US Sherwin-Williams Company has donated environmentally friendly paints for classrooms and water-resistant and mildew-proof professional quality paint for the kitchen.
Volunteers from Kraft Foods help in the kitchen and teach nutrition and hygiene classes to pupils.
Pradeep Pant, president of Kraft Foods Asia Pacific Region, believes the program brings people together.
"The program in China is special, and involves giving back to the community. More than 2,000 employees have been working as volunteers at schools. It brings happiness and fun in a wonderful job benefiting beautiful kids," he said.
"It's all about involving people and educating kids. Visiting the school reminds me of the old days when I was a schoolboy."
Shawn Warren, president of Kraft Foods China, said that the program aims at improving the food supply and nutrition of rural Chinese school children, through improving the nutritional knowledge and food safety practices of rural teachers and kitchen staff.
"We donated 5.5 million yuan (US$866,195) to build the first 100 Kraft Hope Kitchens in five Chinese provinces - Anhui, Yunnan, Jilin, Hunan and Hebei," he said.
"It offers us the opportunity to get closer to the community and interact with kids. As we have proceeded, we have found that the schools and children living around the more developed cities also need good school kitchens. That is why we built this Kraft Hope Kitchen."
Last year, 150 well-equipped Kraft Hope Kitchens in 14 provinces were up and running, providing hot meals for 75,000 school children.
By the end of 2012, there will be 200 Kraft Hope Kitchens totally benefiting over 10,000 rural school children.
Chongming Island is only a two-hour drive from downtown Shanghai.
However, the rural schools there do not have the infrastructure, such as school kitchens, common in city schools.
